N.B. Hunt, The Historical Atlas of Ancient America, Thalmus, 2001 is an excellent atlas, but be aware that, despite its name, it focusses only on Mesoamerica.
C Waldman, Atlas of the North American Indian, Checkmate Books, 2000 – aa very informative survey of Native American history and culture. However, I would have liked it to deal with the more recent history of the different people encountered by European when they arrived.
A lavishly illustrated work on archaeology for the general reader which includes a large section on Pre-Columbian cultures, is Renfrew, C. (ed.), Past Worlds: The Times Atlas of Archaeology, Times Books, 1995, p. 204ff.
A work on general archaeology aimed primarily at students, but readable and with good coverage of Pre-Columbian America, is Scarre, C. (ed.), The Human Past, Thames & Hudson, 2005, p. 306ff., p.594ff., p. 640ff., and p. 678ff.
