One unit, two resources
This Premium Unit provides a panoramic survey of the history of Medieval India between 500 CE and 1450 CE.
The unit contains two main resources. These facilitate two different approaches to using it with your students – as a slide show for whole-class presentation or as map/information pages for student-based project work.
1. Slide Show
The slide show is designed to engage students with its attractive, high resolution maps for projection onto a large screen. This makes it ideal for use as a whole-class presentation.
It is accompanied by an informative teacher’s commentary, to aid in covering the different points of interest on each map.
It can also be used in student project work, and a student commentary is also included.
2. Map sequences
The sequence of map pages are for use in students’ enquiry work.
No commentary is required as each map is accompanied by information covering the period with which it deals.
Teachers notes are provided. These include suggested classroom strategies and student activities, for teachers to use or adapt as they see fit.
Both these resources can be slotted in wherever the teacher wishes. For example, they can be used as an introduction to this era of world history, or in a “wrap up” session – or indeed as the primary “textbook” resource for studying this topic.
Learning outcomes
On completing this unit, students should have a broad understanding of the history of Medieval India, including:
- The rise and fall of kingdoms and empires in central and southern India – most notably, the Chola kingdom which was the only Indian state to become a major sea power;
- The battle for supremacy in northern India which endured over hundreds of years, and which gave birth to a class of Rajput warrior princes.
- The invasions and conquests of Muslim forces into northern India from Afghanistan;
- The emergence of modern Hinduism and the decline of Buddhism in India;
- The rise and decline of one of the great empires of Indian history, the Delhi Sultanate, and the impact this had on the whole Indian Subcontinent.
