One unit, two resources

This Premium Unit provides a panoramic overview of the history of the Ancient Middle East.

It contains two kinds of resources:

a slide show and
two sequences of map pages.

These enable two different approaches to using the unit with your students – for a whole-class presentation or for student project work.

1. Slide Show

The slide show covers the whole period of Medieval Europe, from 500 CE to 1450 CE. It is designed to engage students with its attractive, high resolution maps for projection onto a large screen. This makes it ideal for use as a whole-class presentation.

It is accompanied by an informative teacher’s commentary, to aid in covering the different points of interest on each map.

It can also be used in student project work, and a student commentary is also included.

2. Map pages

The sequence of map pages are for use in students’ own project work. These are aimed primarily at high school and college level students.

There are two map sequences to choose from:

Medieval Europe I: 400 to 1000 CE + Teachers Notes

The history of Europe between 400 CE and 1000 CE – the formation of Medieval Europe. Includes the fall of the Roman empire, the rise of Frankish Europe, the Vikings, the partition of Europe and the formation of France, Germany, eastern Europe and Russia.

Medieval Europe II: 1000 to 1450 CE + Teachers Notes

The history of Europe from 1000 to 1450 – the High Middle Ages. Includes the Norman Conquest of England, the decline of the Byzantine Empire, the Crusades, the Black Death, the Hundred Years’ War and more.

No commentary is required as each map is accompanied by information covering the period with which it deals. The teachers notes include suggested classroom strategies and student activities, for teachers to use or adapt as they see fit.

Learning outcomes

On completing this unit, students should have a broad understanding of the history of Medieval Europe including:

The fall of the Western Roman Empire and the decline of classical civilization, but its endurance at a reduced level within several Germanic kingdoms;

The endurance of the Eastern Roman Empire, and its transformation into the Byzantine Empire;

The survival , and then expansion, of Christianity, in western Europe;

The impact on Europe of the Muslim conquests of the 7th century;

The rise and decline of Charlemagne’s empire;

The Viking, Magyar and Arab invasions, and the emergence of feudalism;

The expansion of Christendom and the formation of Russia;

The Norman conquest of England;

The tensions between Church and State in Medieval Europe;

The Crusades and their influence on Medieval Europe;

The growth of population and trade in Medieval Europe, and the rise of wealthy trading cities in Italy;

The Mongol conquest of Russia and the Mongol invasion of central Europe;

The Black Death and its aftermath;

The emergence of the Renaissance in Italy.
